Last week I posted about how Flickr should make sharing photos easier. (Actually I first started bellyaching about this last October.) I just wanted to point out that (as of yesterday) they seem to have taken my advice. I’m so pleased I’m not even going to bill them for a consulting fee.
Thanks to the inestimable [...]

My new iMac arrived Thursday. First impression: Wow, this thing is huge. It’s mostly screen, of course, but at 20″ x 12″ it’s almost twice the size of my old iMac’s screen.
I tried using the Migration Assistant to move data from the old iMac to the new one. Unfortunately this worked for Xy’s account but [...]

Yesterday I learned from Karen G that Flickr is now hosting video. Of course they’ve provided a nice “embed” feature just like you’d expect, so you can grab an HTML snippet to paste the video into your blog or webpage. That’s dandy. But what really chaps my ass is: Why can’t they provide the same [...]

Speaking of Ashley Morris, some random guy left the following comment on my blog:
Ilove NO and would like to live there someday but the mentality of a large part of the minority population is that they are owed something. Since Katerna, there has been Taco and Mexican restaurants popping up every where. That is great [...]

Everybody’s favorite passionately profane New Orleans überpatriot blogger Ashley Morris has passed on.
I really don’t know anything about the circumstances of his death except to say he was way too young. This is a tragedy.
And I really don’t know what to say, except that I sure will miss his voice. I didn’t really know Ashley [...]

Question: When will the NOLA blogosphere finally get around to infecting Twitter?
Answer: Last week. I blame Alan.
PS: In the spirit of constant self-aggrandizement, I should mention that I’m editor_b on Twitter.

In between changing diapers and rocking the girl to sleep and running the odd errand or rustling grub, I’m preoccupied with migrating rox.com to a new webhost. Dusting off those command-line skillz I haven’t used for a good while. So far, so good.
Update: The migration was a success. I hope to write something about DreamHost [...]

Much to my regret, I’m shopping for a new webhost, and I could use a little advice.

I had planned to Twitter my daughter’s birth. It seemed like the perfect tool for giving blow-by-blow updates in real time, and it’s easy to do from my phone.
Alas, it was not to be. Last week I suffered what I call a “communication meltdown,” where multiple technologies fail me at the same time, compounding one [...]

Due to circumstances beyond my control, all rox.com e-mail is out of commission for the foreseeable future; however I do have my replacement Crackberry so you can call or txt me.

I’ve been in a bit of a flame war on an e-mail discussion list over the last couple weeks. I thought it was all rather silly, but my main combatant sent me a private message last night, off-list, that has really thrown me for a loop. Here’s the pertinent extract:
I am still restrained about this. [...]

Since all the cool kids are doing mashups these days, I couldn’t help but try my hand, however inept. A month or two ago when I had some spare time I threw these two together.
But It Seemed So Real

Let me see if I got this straight. The American Society of Civil Engineers got pissed off about the video PSA produced by high school students and posted by Levees.org to YouTube. ASCE demanded the video be removed. So Levees.org removed it. Then, the Times-Picayune wrote a story about it. As part of their online [...]

Before the panel, Chris and Sandy and Alan and Ted and I were sitting together, having breakfast and chatting.
Chris asked each of us for a tidbit of personal info he could use in the introductions. I told him I put the first TV series on the internet. Alan considered for a moment and finally said, [...]

I’m gearing up for the New Media Consortium’s 2007 Regional Conference later this week. I’ll be on a panel called “Digital in the Wild” with Alan Gutierrez, Sandy Rosenthal, Ted Cash, and Christopher Reader (moderator). So I’m pondering the following discussion questions and working out what I might say.
How did your technology needs change from [...]

I’m not sure what the game is, exactly, but I noticed this blog links to an old post of mine; it looks human at first but a quick scan thru the site confirms it’s being compiled by robots.

Last week I moderated a blogger panel. I was disappointed with the low attendance, but at certain times of the semester it’s hard to get faculty to turn out. However, I was very pleased with the actual content — the bloggers were articulate and thoughtful and passionate. It was a great discussion. A big thank [...]

I try to keep it civil, both in real life and here on this blog. I try not to call names. When I got worked up and called Jindal a “nutjob” I felt compelled to apologize for it.
And I appreciate how, for the most part, people who comment on what I write here also keep [...]
