Copeland Ha Muerto

March 24th, 2008 by Editor B

Yesterday Al Copeland died at the tender age of 64. Outside New Orleans he was primarily known as the founder of Popeyes Fried Chicken. Around the local area he was known for all sorts of things, but most of all for being a character.

My only real connection to Al is this: The judge he bribed in his custody case is the son of the old man who owns the house across the street from us.

I did feel a special pang of sympathy when I learned that Mr Copeland died from cancer of the salivary glands. Considering the current size of the gland on the right side of my neck — well, it gives a fellow pause.

The doctor has upgraded me to a stronger antibiotic (Cipro). He also stuck his finger down my throat and couldn’t feel an abcess so I guess that’s good news.

Wow, Cipro? Strong stuff. I haven’t taken that since I was in India.

It will tear you up less if you couple it with acidophilus. Hope you feel better soon.

Some regarded this guy derisively as new rich white trash. Some are born on third base and think they hit a triple. This guy hit his own stand-up triple — H/S dropout and for a time lived in the projects.

From the Times Picayune article – “After six months, Chicken on the Run was still losing money. In a last-ditch effort, Copeland chose a spicier Louisiana Cajun-style recipe and reopened the restaurant as Popeyes. In its third week of operation, Copeland’s revived chicken restaurant broke the profit barrier.”

Interesting what a small change can make in one’s destiny.

Ah, Cipro! I love it! I carry a stash of it with me whenever I go on vacation! You can actually feel it work sometimes, which would be disturbing if you weren’t sick.
