Mashups
December 6th, 2007 by Editor BSince all the cool kids are doing mashups these days, I couldn’t help but try my hand, however inept. A month or two ago when I had some spare time I threw these two together.
- But It Seemed So Real [mp3, 6.8MB]
- House of Grunt [mp3, 9MB]
I apologize in advance for inflicting these upon the world.

I was looking for this: “In technology, a mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool; an example is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real-estate data from Craigslist, thereby creating a new and distinct web service that was not originally provided by either source.”-from Wikipedia

Howie, same idea but in music: “a musical genre of songs that consist entirely of parts of other songs.” There’s a full Wikipedia article.
Rick, I used GarageBand.
Scott, I wouldn’t presume to say these are as good as DJ Earworm, or anyone else for that matter. I think they’re pretty different from Earworm, who obviously puts a lot more popcraft into his stuff. These are simpler. But you can judge for yourself.

thanks bart. i’ve been screwing around with garage band a little bit but had no idea it could be used to this extent.
if you ever get a chance check out “brain freeze” and “product placement” by two djs named cut chemist and dj shadow.
it uses a lot of obscure louisiana funk , r&b , and even some zydeco.
it’s a fun way to hear a new take on old music .

Are there suggested programs/sources to separate the vocal tracks from the music tracks on a regular mp3? I think I’ll be doing some research, and trying to make some music today, love your songs B-man.

Scottica, I don’t know any way to do what you want aside from heavy EQing — which is something I haven’t messed with for these tracks. I just combined instrumentals with acapellas.
