Just to make clear, the Tactical Trash Force has been around for quite a while. There's a June 26, 2006 press release about it on the City's website:

<a href="http://www.cityofno.com/portal.aspx?portal=1&load=~/PortalModules/ViewPressRelease.ascx&itemid=3624" rel="nofollow">Mayor, New Orleans City Council Develop Trash Solution </a>

Interesting how CWL was around to claim credit for that one, but seems to be ducking the latest controversy.

And Nagin continues to insist that he will somehow convince FEMA to reimburse the city for these expenditures... despite FEMA's adamant contrary statements.

A friend of mine works for the City and sent me a slideshow that the Mayor presented recently to a bunch of City department heads and public agencies> This was a few days before all this information about the garbage contract hit the paper. The Mayor apparently bragged a lot about the additional $1.5 million he is funneling into having City sanitation workers pick up trash-- it's on two slides, as " recovery accomplishments" and "quality of life improvement", both as a very positive thing. He apparently also said that he's promoting Veronica White and making her in charge of demolitions, and that he was proud of her for being strict about the "iron-clad" disposal contract. In fact, we seem to be paying twice for this service. This seems like mismanagement of public funds to me.

The full list of "recovery accomplishments" on the slide are: Debris Removal, Reducing City Employees, Restoring Utilities, and Lobbying DC during 31 trips. Seems a little sparse to me, and some of those things were really accomplished by other agencies.

This is probably the city's Tactical Trash Force at work. There's an article related to them in today's paper:

<a href="http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/neworleans/index.ssf?/base/news-8/1193982673184220.xml&coll=1" rel="nofollow">Nagin directs money to clear debris</a>

Great way to spend precious city money for work already being paid for.

I wouldn't be so sure the property owners won't get a bill from the city. If some one is keeping track, the City will try to collect a fee or a fine or something.
