No Joke
February 7th, 2006 by Editor BI thought this was a joke at first, but apparently it’s for real. New Orleans is seeking foreign aid. The mayor says:
France can take Treme. The king of Jordan can take the Lower Ninth Ward.
Has it really come to this?

Hasn’t Venezuela and others already donated some? Or have I misinterpret what has been said? I don’t know why, but I thought there was foriegn aid there. But then again I don’t know a whole lot about the situation. Excuse my ignorance.

I remember back when it happened, China offered to send — I don’t know what they’re called — those people who try to prevent disease outbreaks in flooded area. I wonder what happened with that?

The Mexican army has already been here.

Is there anywhere that lists how much money has been spent on NO by the US so far? What about public vs private money?
I know that for those that live(d) there, it’s not enough and it’s not quick enough. That’s a completely understandable attitude. But has it really come to this, where we actually need foreign aid, or is this a stunt by the inept Nagin?
Also, what financial infrastructure has been put into place for the disbursement of funds? It isn’t the same Nagin-Blanco-FEMA axis of incompetence, is it? Add corrupt Levee Boards and everyone else in the axis of graft, and the rebuilding efforts don’t inspire confidence unless there is a new way of doing things down there.

I’m wondering if the lack of action on the part of the federal government will have an effect on the 2008 presidential election. I believe Louisiana was a red state in 2004. Any chance voters who resent the tardy response of the Bush Administration will take it out on the republicans at the polls?

It’s true that Louisiana went Republican in 2004, but Orleans Parish voted pretty overwhelmingly for that Democrat guy. What was his name? Oh yeah: Kerry. Anyway, I’m sure people are over the state are angry at the current administration, but the big population center that was most affected by Katrina was New Orleans. So I don’t know if that will make much of a difference at all.
