I was unable to find an actual Times-Picayune newspaper on Christmas Day, but looking around on the web I found the following article, which was published in said paper on said day: “What will New Orleans look like five years from now?” It’s quite lengthy for a newspaper artcle, but I found it fascinating.

It’s a really great article, and raises many more questions than it proposes answers. I guess the big one is: how do we get there from here? Like any overwhelming task, it must begin with baby steps, and I am not sure what the article is suggesting should be the first ones. A change in the way (re)building permits are issued? A cohesive plan for which neighborhoods are to be rebuilt, and which are not? A change in zoning to allow more flexibility for mixed use development? Next month the students of Loyola, Tulane, Xavier and Dillard will return to classes. In anticipation of their return, the faculties and administrations of those institutions are there now. I think it’s a case of, ready or not, here it comes.
